Music Licensing

Music Licensing

A very lengthy and expensive music licensing Tribunal hearing in Australia is nearing a close. The outcome could decide how much is paid for using recorded music. Fitness centres that play music for group exercise classes were facing massive increases to copyright licence fees from the PPCA (PPL), in a move that could threaten the future of group exercise in Australia.

The current claim by PPCA is that Fitness Centres that play music for group exercises should pay a tariff of $4.54 per member per month regardless of whether that member takes part in group exercise classes. The current tariff is $0.968 per class. Fitness Australia has put up a strong case against the proposed increase – but the Tribunal will decide – and whatever is the outcome will eventually affect all music collection agencies around the world.

EREPS and EHFA have given support to Fitness Australia in their battle and we will keep you posted on developments and the recommendations of the Tribunal.
